Washington, DC

Named for our first president, George Washington, Washington, DC is 68.3 square miles in area.The U.S. CapitalLocated along the Potomac River it is bordered by the states of Virginia, to the west and Maryland to the north, east and south.The design of the city is the work of Pierre Charles L'Enfant a French architect, engineer and city planner who first arrived in the American colonies as a military engineer with Major General Lafayette.Based on his plan, Washington is divided into 4 quadrants, Northwest, Southwest, Northeast and Southeast.The U.S. Capital marks the point where the quadrants meet.Lettered streets run east and west while numbered streets run north and south.Avenues named for the states run diagonally meeting at circles or squares.


As of 2002, the federal government accounted for 27% of Washingtons jobs.


Washington, DC was formed in the 18th century as the nations capital and is located within the District of Columbia.The District of Columbia was formed to keep the national capital separate from the states.The city is commonly called Washington, DC, The District or DC.The population of Washington is approximately 581,000.

The White HouseIn 1961, the U.S. Constitution was amended to allow the residents of the District of Columbia to vote for the president.In addition, the residents elect a mayor and a city council, however, Congress has complete authority over the District and intervenes from time to time in local affairs.The District has a non-voting at-large Congressional representative.This lack of true representation results in the citizens of Washington having less self-governing power than residences of the states.

The Washington, DC metropolitan area is also world headquarters for corporations such as USAirways, Marriott, Amtrak, Gannett News, Mobil Oil, MCI Telecommunications and the International Monetary Fund.In addition, Washington has a very cosmopolitan flavor because it is host to 180 embassies and numerous international organizations.
 

Washington is home to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum

During a normal business day, the District of Columbia has an influx of over 410,000 workers a 72% increase over the normal population.This is the second largest percentage increase of any city except for New York City.

Several well known colleges and university are located in the District.Some of these schools are the University of the District of Columbia, Georgetown University, George Washington University, American University and The Catholic University of America.Gallaudet University, the first liberal arts college for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and Howard University, a historically black university dating back to the nineteenth century, are also located in Washington.

Washington, DC is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States.It is home to the White House and U.S. Capital as well as numerous monuments and memorials and to name just a few museums, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery of Art.The Library of Congress is home to many thousands of documents covering every period in American history while the Declaration of Independence can be viewed at the National Archives.
