A cross the Potomac River from Washington, DC, Arlington is 26 square miles in size and is home to Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, the Iwo Jima Memorial and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.With a population of approximately 200,000 people, Arlington County has the highest population density of any county in Virginia.Arlington's population is racially, ethnically and culturally diverse.It has over 86,000 households and 39,000 families.The average size household is 2.15 people and the average size family is 2.96 people.There are 101.5 males for every 100 females. Arlington's residents are highly educated with over 60% of adults 25 years of age or older having a bachelors degree or higher and 30% having a graduate degree or professional degree.This ranks it as one of the top 10 states as far as education spending per student. The Arlington Public School District has many accolades and awards for their innovative technology and programs.
Just like Fairfax County, Arlington is served by the Orange, Blue and Yellow lines of the Washington's Metro rail system as well as by the regional Metro bus, the local public bus system, Arlington Transit and the Virginia Railway Express system.The two major highways are Interstate 66 to the north and Interstate 395 to the south.Both highways have high-occupancy (HOV) lane restrictions.
Arlington has most recently developed urban villages around Metro rail stations such as Ballston, Clarendon, Courthouse, Crystal City, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, Shirlington and Virginia Square.These are areas of commercial activity and high density residential development.However, there are still numerous neighborhoods that are primarily residential.
For the enjoyment of all visitors and residents, Arlington County has over 86 miles of biking/jogging trails, 200 parks, 14 community centers and 8 libraries.
