 Alexandria is almost 50 years older than Washington, DC.Incorporated in 1779, Alexandria was known as a port of entry and a major export center for flower and hemp.Its historic district, located on the Potomac River, is called Old Town and is known for its museums, historic town houses, art galleries, hotels, fine restaurants and special events.Its old town character is preserved by strict architectural guidelines.
